United now in the ascendancy, eyes turn to Champions League

Even the strikers have found the back of the net in an unexpected winning streak.

Manchester United defeated Everton 3-0 in the 13th round of the 2023-24 Premier League (PL) season at Goodison Park in Liverpool, England, at 1:30 a.m. ET on Sunday. With the win, United (24 points) jumped to sixth place, while Everton (4 points) remained in 19th place.

United are not doing well with their fans. They’re playing worse than they did last season, and with a rash of injuries, they’re not performing well, especially on offense. The highly touted Rasmus Hojelin hasn’t scored in the league and ace Marcus Rashford hasn’t been satisfactory. Anthony and Jadon Sancho have personal problems and are out of favor with coach Eric ten Hagg. The internal atmosphere is also turbulent as the acquisition issue has not been resolved.

In a game that saw fans complain, Manchester United beat Everton 3-0. Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring with a spectacular bicycle kick and Rashford converted from the penalty spot after captain Bruno Fernandes was booked. Anthony Martial also found the back of the net as United cruised to a 3-0 victory.

Despite losing the Manchester derby to Manchester City, they have now won five of their last six games. Their three-game winning streak has helped them climb up the standings, and they’re up to sixth place with 24 points. They are four points behind fourth-place Aston Villa and two points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who dropped to fifth after losing three straight after going unbeaten. Regardless of their performance, United are on an upward trajectory.

The goals from the forwards have been encouraging, and as I mentioned earlier, there has been a long period of silence from the forwards. Prior to the Everton game, only Rashford had scored a goal (in the PL). Bruno, Scott McTominay, Victor Lindelof, Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, and others have scored goals, but the lack of striker goals has been disappointing.

Garnacho, Rashford, and Martial scored goals in quick succession, and they were all strikers. The strikers’ confidence should be even higher. Currently last in UEFA Champions League (UCL) Group A, United have a crucial match against Galatasaray. They need to win to improve their chances of reaching the round of 16. They need to continue their league rise in the UCL.
