The LG Twins, who are in sole possession of first place, swept a doubleheader to extend their winning streak to four games.
LG won the first game of a doubleheader against the SSG Landers of the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League 8-3 on Sunday at Jamsil Stadium before taking the second game 9-5.
With the four-game win streak, LG maintained a six-game lead over second-place KT Wiz.
In Game 1, LG turned the game around in the bottom of the sixth inning after the game was suspended for 70 minutes due to rain.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the sixth, SSG pulled starter Kim Kwang-hyun and brought in Noh Kyung-eun, and Kim Hyun-soo’s double tied the game at 3-3 before Moon Bo-kyung and Park Dong-won hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 5-3.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, LG scored three runs on four hits to seal the deal.
LG bounced back in game two.
After falling behind 0-2 in the bottom of the third inning, LG turned it into a 3-2 game with a trio of two-run homers, and in the top of the fourth inning, Heo Do-hwan hit a thunderous solo homer and Austin Dean added a three-run triple to make it 7-2.
After dropping both games of the doubleheader, SSG fell to sixth place with their fifth straight loss.
This is the first time the defending champions have fallen outside the top five this season.
In the other match, KT WIZ won both Games 1 and 2 of the doubleheader to stay in second place.
In game one, KT swept Hanwha 7-0 behind a strong pitching performance from William Cuevas.
After Hwang Jae-gyun doubled in the first inning and Kang Baek-ho singled up the middle to open the scoring, KT took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning when Anthony Alford hit a two-run home run to left field.
In the seventh, pinch-hitter Lee Ho-yeon doubled in two runs, and in the top of the ninth, pinch-hitter Kim Jun-tae hit a two-run homer to tie the game.
Cuevas struck out five in the seventh inning, shutting down the Hanwha bats with seven hits and no runs.
In game two, KT took an early lead.
Jang Jang-woo hit a two-run homer in the top of the second inning to give KT a 2-0 lead and added a run in the third.
Hanwha got one run back in the bottom of the third on an infield single by Nick Williams.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Hanwha offense resumed play after the game was suspended for a record-breaking three hours and 24 minutes due to heavy rain.
However, neither team was able to score a run, giving KT a 3-1 victory.
In Gwangju, the Doosan Bears, led by Yang Seok-hwan’s four-hit performance, defeated the KIA Tigers 8-3.
With their six-game winning streak, Doosan moved into sole possession of fourth place, ahead of KIA and SSG.
Doosan took the lead in the top of the second inning when Kang Seung-ho hit a solo home run to left field.
Doosan took a 2-1 lead again in the top of the third inning when Yang Seok-hwan hit an RBI single.
In the top of the fifth inning, Park Jun-young hit a solo home run followed by a two-run double by Yang Seok-hwan to make it 5-1.
KIA cut the deficit to 3-5 in the bottom of the fifth when Na Sung-bum hit a solo home run to right field.
However, Doosan made it 7-3 in the top of the seventh when Jung Soo-bin, who reached on an error, scored on Yang Seok-hwan’s single and Kang Seung-ho, who doubled, scored on Cho Soo-hyung’s infield single.
In the ninth, Yang drove in a run with a solo shot to left-center field.
In Daegu, the Lotte Giants, led by Ahn Chi-hong’s two home runs and five RBIs, beat the Samsung Lions 7-4.
Lotte opened the scoring in the first inning with a run-scoring single by Jeon Jun-woo, and took a 3-0 lead in the second with a two-run homer by Ahn Chi-hong.
In the top of the fourth inning, Lotte scored four runs, including a three-run homer by Ahn Chi-hong, to take a 7-0 lead.
Samsung fought back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run by Jose Pirela.
