Head-to-head wins a month after losing Wimbledon final
The all-time series is tied at 2-2.
Novak Djokovic (No. 2-SERBIA) has claimed his first title in a month by upsetting Carlos
Alcaraz (No. 1-SPAN) to win the 토토 Western & Southern Open on the Association of
Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour.
Djokovic defeated Alcaraz 2-1 (5-7 7-6<9-7> 7-6<7-4>) in a grueling three-hour,
49-minute match in the singles final of the tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, on
Sunday (July 21).
Djokovic avenged a 2-3 (6-1 6-7<6-8> 1-6 6-3 4-6) loss to Alcaraz in the men’s singles
final at Wimbledon last month.
Djokovic and Alcaraz are now evenly matched at two wins apiece.
They have met twice at the majors and twice at the ATP Masters 1000 Series, a nine-tournament
yearly tier just below the majors, splitting the victories.
In their first meeting, Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in the semifinals of last year’s ATP 1000
Series Madrid Open. Djokovic prevailed in the semifinals of this year’s French Open.
Djokovic and Alcaraz will once again be in contention for the title at the final major of the
season, the US Open, which begins on April 28 in New York City.
It will be the third time in his career that Djokovic has won the Cincinnati Open, following
titles in 2018 and 2020.
It is the first time in three years that Djokovic has tasted victory on U.S. soil, 안전놀이터
having not competed in a U.S. event since his 2021 U.S. Open singles runner-up finish due
to a lack of a COVID-19 vaccine.
The way was cleared for Djokovic to compete in the U.S. in May when the U.S. government
allowed foreigners who had not been vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter the country.
Djokovic and Alcaraz, who battled to a full-set victory in the Wimbledon final, battled back and forth
in a match that went to tiebreaks on two occasions.
In the third set, Djokovic held his serve to deuce with the score at 5-4, forcing another
tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Alcaraz failed to return Djokovic’s serve properly, sealing the victory for Djokovic.
In the other Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour event, No. 7-ranked Coco Goff (USA)
defeated No. 17-ranked Karolina Muhova (Czech Republic) 2-0 (6-3 6-4) to stay on top.
Goff, the 2022 French Open runner-up, celebrated her first victory in a WTA 1000 Series event.
Born in March 2004, the 19-year-old became the first teenager to win the event in 55 years,
